I thought it was about time that I introduced Midlands Women In Business (MWIB) in an official capacity on my blog.
In October/November last year, I went into a creative frenzy for about two solid days, bringing an idea (that I’d been mulling over for ages) to life: I wanted to create an opportunity for female entrepreneurs, businesswomen and freelancers in the KZN Midlands to connect. Everything fell into place so perfectly – the whole idea, the branding, the website – I always feel that when it is ‘easy’ it is obviously meant to be…
The gist: MWIB members come together at regular formal and informal planned events / talks / workshops (at least once a month), to network in an authentic and collaborative way, helping members to grow, share, show support for one another and learn from each other. Select events are open to the public who will pay premium fees for the event, but members enjoy the benefit of discounted ticket fees and other perks that you can read about here.
Our first official MWIB event was held towards the end of January at The Farmer’s Daughter in Howick, and I was so thrilled with how awesome it was, despite me having to leave my comfort zone and address the crowd! Everyone present had a chance to mingle, as well as to quickly introduce themselves to the group, and beyond that, the conversation flowed, as did the wine! ?
One of the most exciting parts about MWIB for me are the ‘focus pod’ sessions – these are smaller group meetups in varying locations, where each member gets a chance during the get together to talk about their specific issues. The group then comes together to weigh in, share experiences and brainstorm collectively to help provide a solution / support in some way. These have been really useful and informative so far and I can’t wait to keep facilitating them throughout the year (at least 1-2 sessions a month is the plan!)
I had initially hope to reach 50 members by the end of 2018, but we have actually already surpassed that and there are just so many amazing ladies involved that I feel so inspired by it all!
I must give a big shout out to my right-hand-woman, the lovely Kate Winter, who has been helping me out at Bird & Design HQ two mornings a week for past couple of months – she’s done so much to help me with setting up and maintaining the smooth running MWIB processes, and just in general to help me maintain my sanity ?
