So excited to feature the lovely Scatter Studio on my blog – a retail space and workshop based at The Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock on the KZN North Coast. Co-founder, (and old school friend!) Emily Smithers, gave me the scoop on this lovely creative business, which is in essence, a shared studio space occupied and run by three local creatives: a jeweller, a textile designer and an artist.
- Mariza (Meez) Nixon / Creõ – a self-taught jeweller who works with sterling silver (find her on Instagram: @creo_mariza_nixon_studios
- Emily Smithers / Milk and Honey – a textile designer and artist who produces hand printed art and fabric (find her on Instagram: @emjsmithers)
- Erin van der Merwe / Quirk.e / Lark Creative – an multi-talented artist who makes textiles, ceramics, jewellery and more (find her on Instagram: @lark_creative_)
The trio sell their wares through Scatter and run creative workshops in the studio for children and adults (offering classes on anything from pottery and art, to fabric printing and tie dying etc) as well as art classes for kids during the school holidays (winner!) Apart from the products made and sold in store, they retail for a handful of other local artists and creatives whose work they believe needs to be seen by the world!
Emily says: “Scatter came about quite suddenly and randomly! Erin and Meez were having a coffee at The Litchi Orchard one day, and dreaming about how to turn the empty retail space that was available then, into a studio and shop. I’d had a long time dream of doing this myself, and of running art and creative workshops too, and I happened to hear about their initial conversation… Within a month from that coffee date, we’d claimed the space, furnished it and opened our business! We believe that everyone has creativity inside them, whether you are good at art or bad at it, it’s not the point. There is a freedom and destiny that is unlocked when creating with your hands. Our heart is to encourage and bring that out through our products and our workshops.”
I just LOVE the story behind how quickly this little idea came to fruition, and I love Em’s words about the freedoms unlocked through being creative – what a stunning business ethos and wish you ladies all the best in the years to come!
