Facebook has been trying to tell me I need vellies in my life – I keep seeing posts, images and adverts from a brand called Veldskoen™ – and I’m not even surprised about it, because they totally tick two boxes when it comes to things I am passionate about: CREATIVE and SOUTH AFRICAN! Never has a vellie been sexier and I wont lie, I’m keen.
If you are not South African, and have no idea what the hell I’m talking about, Wikipedia breaks it down here:
“Veldskoen (or vellie, colloquial, veldskoene plural, alternately velskoens or velskoene plural; pronounced “FELL-skoons”) are Southern African walking shoes made from vegetable-tanned leather or soft rawhide uppers attached to a leather footbed and rubber sole without tacks or nails. The name comes from Afrikaans vel (“skin”) (later assimilated to veld (“field”)) and skoen (“shoe”)”
Vellies are typically unexciting and available in limited natural colours – Veldskoen™ have transformed the idea of traditional vellies with the clever use of coloured soles and through their clearly beautiful craftsmanship.
I just love the bright coloured soles of their Heritage range and their branding, storytelling and overall vibe is just so on point! I feel like the red-soled ones are SA’s version of a Louboutin 😉
