Let me begin by saying that Katie-Lee Wisdom from Summertown Pictures is no ordinary human – she is quirky and sweet and amazingly talented, the best kind of client I could ever ask for! I met Katie a while back and we’ve kept in touch via social media – when she contacted me about a rebrand and new website for her wedding and lifestyle photography business, I literally ‘whooped’ out loud!
Katie had an idea of what she wanted to achieve design-wise with both her branding and website, but she also gave me enough leg room to exercise my creativity – THIS is the perfect formula for a successful designer-client relationship and I’m super proud about how the project turned out, especially because of that fact that the logo itself is hand-illustrated (I don’t actually consider myself a natural when it comes to drawing believe it or not!)
Some pics below of the design process for the project – from initial sketch phase to final products…
SOME OF MY INSPIRATION (not to be confused with a moodboard, these are literally images I drew inspiration from after discussing Katie’s requirements, and I used these (along with others) as a basis to get my ideas across through my initial sketches…)
THE INITIAL SKETCHES (these were done to give Katie some ideas re: the layouts we could try – they are VERY rough – she was immediately drawn to the circular idea and we just decided to roll with that…)
FIRST DRAFT SKETCH (in pencil)
INKED VERSION (I used a black thin-nibbed fine liner and then scanned the image in in high contrast – still needs to be converted to a vector in Adobe Illustrator at this stage, and then cleaned up…)
THE FINAL PRODUCT (displayed here on a stylesheet – font amended and added digitally as I wasn’t ‘feeling’ my own handdrawn version and Katie liked Firefly too – colours and additional elements were also created to the final look)
WEBSITE (designed by me and coded by legend developer Nicola Tweed)
Check out Summertown Pictures for yourself – Katie is based in KZN and has an awesome photographic style – I love her creative and candid shots and was lucky to see her in action at my friend Amy’s wedding last December.
